KABAGANWA Claire is a farmer living in Nyamagabe District uwinkingi Sector Munyege Cell, in Kanyampongo Village from COOPIMU Cooperative.low crop production, lack of food and money for medical insures and school fees for children are the main problems at household level.
UNICOOPAGI has been a great solution to my family problems where trainings and other facilities in partnership with Vi-Agroforestry, contributed to the increase of crop production and improved livelihood.
Today, the small livestock received helped the family to pay school fees for children, to improve soil fertility for agricultural production increase and to solve other household needs. As it was in her commitment Claire has managed to purchase a cow from pig rearing which is a great achievement of her family. She said: “My life has really changed I am thankful to Viagroforestry and project staff for trainings, advices and support provided to impact my family life”.
“This cow is a great solution to my family, i have enough organic manure to increase the production, I will get much money from this livestock”.
HABIMANA Gregoire
Success Story of HABIMANA Gregoire
HABIMANA Gregoire is a farmer living in Nyamagabe District , Uwinkingi Sector munyege Cell from coopimu Cooperative, through her testimony After UNICOOPAGI/VI AGROFORESTRY’s trainings, he sat and took decision to work hard for the development of his family.
Before UNICOOPAGI/VI_Agroforestry trainings, this was a poor family, with shortage of food to feed the family, low crop production due to poor agricultural practices, with no any animal keeping it was difficult for this family ,where his wife and his children were not able to find fire woods and water for home daily life easily and even difficult to find school fees for children.
Therefore, Gregoire and his wife joined UNICOOPAGI where they received trainings on required agricultural practices to increase crop production, and other trainings. Through these trainings the mindsets of both Gregoire and his wife changed and began to respect advices of agronomists and this changes has contributed to the increase of their crop production.
Then after much training from UNICOOPAGI in partnership Vi-Agro forestry, Gregoire and his wife decided to shift from traditional agriculture to modern agriculture and their cop production has increased. Today they are able to pay school fees for 4 children
As results of the trainings, the man managed to understand his responsibilities towards household development and that is why he decided to facilitate her wife to find water at household level through water tank construction. During the training on rainwater harvesting this man Gregoire agreed to contribute 50000rwfs to purchase timbers for water tank construction at his home.
Through UNICOOPAGI in partnership with VI AGROFORESTRY and Nyamagabe District, also has contribute to the biogas construction at home to reduce his children and wife’s activities in fire wood searching. Gregoire has also contributed to the fodder bank establishment where he has been trained on how he can get feeds for his cattle by growing pastures and legumes for feeding his animals in order to increase animal productivity.
TWAGIRAYEZU PIERRE
Success Story of TWAGIRAYEZU PIERRE
TWAGIRAYEZU PIERRE is a farmer living in Nyamagabe District Uwinkingi Sector munyege Cell from COOPIMU Cooperative, through his testimony After UNICOOPAGI/VI AGROFORESTRY’s trainings, he started to work hard for the development of his family by using all skills from the trainings that he has received from Unicoopagi/ vi agro forestry.
Before UNICOOPAGI/VI_Agroforestry trainings, this was a poor family, with shortage of food to feed the family, low crop production due to poor agricultural practices, difficult to find school fees for his children , for now twagirayezu is using agronomic techniques which helped him to increase the production of crops especially maize and tomato trees.
For now twagirayezu is able to pay school fees of his children, to pay medical insurance and other needs. This comes from the respect of all advices from the trainings that he has got through Unicopagi/ VI agro forestry
The increase of his crop production is due to the use of manure from the compost and other agricultural practices that he has got through trainings from UNICOOPAGI in partnership with VI AGROFORESTRY
MUKAMUDENGE Beatrice
For a long time Mrs. MUKAMUDENGE Beatrice was a struggling farmer. She is one of the EPGA/USAID Project beneficiaries and serves as a Community Committee member in GAKOKO Village, BIGUMIRA Cell, and UWINKINGI Sector in Nyamagabe District and has attended several trainings on policy, budget monitoring and advocacy conducted as part of the project funded by USAID and implemented by Trócaire in collaboration with UNICOOPAGI.
She lives with her family of three children; 11 years old boy, and two girls aged 9 and 3 years respectively. She makes a living by growing beans, vegetables, maize, peas, Irish potatoes and wheat. She used to be keeping quite on any issue that impacted on her agricultural production, but after being trained on agricultural policy, budget monitoring and advocacy as a member of Community Committee things changed. She realized that she could make an advocacy on any issue that could hinder the increase of agricultural production towards food security not only for her own interest but also for the general interest of Gakoko Village members.
All this was as a result of being a beneficiary of EPGA in collaboration with UNICOOPAGI, Trócaire and USAID for building her capacity on agricultural policy, budget monitoring and advocacy where she acquired skills to engage into a discussion on agricultural issues. ‘‘Community Committee members in collaboration with EPGA staff in UNICOOPAGI have raised different agricultural issues that we analyzed as major causes of the reduction of agricultural production in our Village, we have been assured that the raised issues are going to be resolved’’, says Beatrice. That is why it is so important that each of us in Community Committee in Collaboration with EPGA Project do our own part to educate ourselves on how to analyse the issues that can hinder the implementation of agricultural policy, which would reduce production and lead to poverty among farmers.
‘’Referring to what have been done through trainings and advocacy, I am sure the future of farmers is promising as we know how our advocacy mechanisms work’’; continues Beatrice. Before this project, Beatrice said that she could not mention anything about the problems that farmers experience due to the delay of seeds and fertilizers, but now she has all it takes to ask any leader (at any level) why agricultural inputs have delayed..
